English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) is offered in many schools that have large numbers of students born in other countries or whose parents do not speak English at home. ESOL prepares students by increasing their academic English language proficiency so that they can participate successfully in high school and college classes. ESOL develops and assesses English language proficiency and communication skills to meet or exceed grade level standards. Intensive practice improves the ability to collaborate and to articulate critical thinking and problem solving skills. Good ESOL programs promote active participation of English learners and their families to create a truly immersive language-learning experience.
