Clay that is not painted looks just like dried mud after it is fired. A clear glaze will make the surface shiny, but a porous matte finish is called Terra cotta which is Italian for "baked earth". The term "terracotta" is often used for baked clay objects that are not made on a potter's wheel, such as figurines.
