Ebony is a black wood that is so dense that it will sink in water. The wood is prized for its fine texture and the very smooth finish that it acquires when polished. The trees that produce ebony grow in southern India, western Africa and Indonesia. Ebony is used for small carved figures like this frog and for the fingerboards of string instruments such as violins and guitars.
