Obsidian is a volcanic glass formed when lava with a high content of quartz cools rapidly, preventing crystallization. Obsidian was used in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica to carve decorative objects and to make sharp cutting tools. Some weapons used obsidian blades mounted in a wooden body. The techniques for producing obsidian objects is similar to the methods used to carve and polish designs on crystal.
