I have visited Filomena several times for lunch, and the service and the food have always been good. The entrance gives the impression of a small place, but the actual restaurant is located one flight of stairs below. The building is along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal (C&O Canal), and some of the windows of the restaurant overlook the picturesque canal.
One of the dishes that I have tried at Filomena is the Penne con Salsicce. This dish consists of whole wheat penne pasta cooked al dente and tossed with pieces of whole link Italian sausage, and a sauce made with ground Italian sausage, mushrooms, onions, chianti wine, herbs and marinara Sauce. This is a very tasty dish.
While you wait for your main dish, the server directs you to the salad bar, which is included. The salad bar has a variety of ingredients including shredded iceberg lettuce, spring salad mix, cherry tomatoes, sliced mushrooms, olives, sliced onions, hard boiled eggs, pecan pieces, garbanzo beans, several prepared salads with cucumbers, with shrimp, with chicken, a variety of salad dressings, and many other ingredients. The price for the main dish and the salad was a modest $9.95 for lunch - a great value.
Immediately as you enter Filomena, there is a small room to the right
where sometimes you will see an Italian lady making fresh ravioli.
She is the "Pasta Mamma", and has mounds of
flour, fresh eggs, and fillings that she uses to make the ravioli. It is no wonder
that the food is good. It is like home-made!

Filomena's menu features the Pasta Mamma's Ravioli di Pollo, which is ravioli stuffed with chicken that has been smoked in-house over hardwood and herbs, and combined with ground vegetables and Italian cheeses. The ravioli is served covered with "Vine Ripened" tomato sauce. This dish is listed at $10.95 for lunch.
From the Filomena Restaurant, you can walk two blocks south toward the Potomac River. You will find the Georgetown Waterfront park as you cross K Street under the Whitehurst freeway. From the park you can see famous landmarks like the Washington Marina, the Watergate Complex, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
